KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. KTH has 13 344 fulltime equivalent students of whom 6 955 at Bachelor (first) level and 5 545 at Master (second) level. In addition 1 314 full-time equivalent students at doctoral studies (third) level and 3 900 employees.

The School of Engineering Sciences carries out a wide range of research at the international front line, from fundamental disciplines such as physics and mathematics, to engineering mechanics with applications such as aeronautics and vehicle engineering. We also offer University degree programs in Engineering Physics, Vehicle Engineering, `Engineering and Education`, and `Open Entrance`, as well as a number of International Masters Programmes.

This is a position for an Early Stage Researcher (ERS) and is funded by the European Commission in the framework of the FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network “Optical and Adaptational Limits of Vision” (OpAL). The OpAL projects aims at training young scientist at the interface of physics and biology, with focus on optical issues, tackling the limits of visual performance. The recruited ERS will be working in the Visual Optics group (www.biox.kth.se/visual_optics) within Biomedical and X-ray Physics, Department of Applied Physics in the School of Science at KTH in Stockholm.

“Role of ocular chromatic aberration in peripheral vision”
This project concerns the optical errors of the eye that degrade the image on our peripheral retina. The ERS will investigate different methodologies to evaluate the chromatic errors of the peripheral eye. The emphasis will be on the transverse chromatic aberration, which is one of the largest aberrations affecting the peripheral image quality. The amount of off-axis chromatic aberration will be measured and compared with the peripheral visual function for monochromatic and broadband targets. These comparisons will answer the question whether the chromatic aberrations are limiting our peripheral visual function or whether the peripheral visual system has adapted to these errors. The project will thereby clarify whether it is worthwhile to minimize off-axis chromatic aberrations in the next generation of spectacles and other correction methods.

The ERS will develop and use different methods to measure the transverse chromatic aberration of the peripheral eye. The work also includes psychophysical methods to evaluate the off-axis visual function, including contrast sensitivity, resolution and detection acuity, with monochromatic and with broadband light sources. Furthermore, spectacle corrections with different amounts of chromatic aberrations will be measured and their effect on peripheral visual function will be investigated.

The candidate should have a Master of Science or equivalent degree in applied physics, or a related discipline which allows to start a doctorate or PhD thesis and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment. Profound knowledge in written and spoken English is required. Preferably, the candidate has broad knowledge of optics as well as experience in laboratory work and programming (e.g. in MatLab). Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities. Additional information, such as “Eligibility Criteria”, can be found on the project webpage
